Delivering E-Consult Value to Providers - Continuing Medical Education
One benefit of e-consult is the educational value primary care providers find in participating. A goal of the CVEC is to offer continuing medical education (CME) in e-consult to support providers. We are offering a session on November 9, E-Consult for Behavioral and Mental Health, presented by faculty Petra Steinbuchel, MD, and Michelle Riederer, MD, UCSF. This session will present case examples of effective e-consult communications in response to patients’ behavioral and mental health needs. Register here for this free event.

Study Finds Effective Intervention to Improve E-Consult Specialist Performance
A new study published in the Journal of General Medicine examines effective interventions for improving performance of specialists that conduct e-consults. The cluster randomized controlled trial which was conducted out of Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, provided feedback to consulting physicians comparing them to top performing peers using co-specialists' ratings. The researchers found that such interventions resulted in significant improvements on 3 of the 5 consultation performance dimensions.

Pediatric Dermatology E-Consults Found to be Effective and Well-Received
A recently published paper in the Journal of Pediatric Dermatology assessed electronic health records of pediatric patients referred through e-Consults at the Massachusetts General Hospital from 1/13/2020 to 7/17/2020 and reviewed confidential surveys taken by pediatricians and parents to assess receptiveness. The results of the study support the use of e-consult for pediatric dermatology and indicate that e-Consult is well received by pediatricians and parents. The authors also suggest that dermatologists should work with referring providers to improve the quality of submitted photographs and patient history.
